How to Design a Coordinated Marble and Terrazzo Coaster Set

Posted on September 22, 2026

To design a coordinated marble and terrazzo coaster set, give both pieces the same base colour, repeat a main accent and keep their shapes consistent. Then let the patterns differ: flowing veins on one coaster and scattered chips on the other. That combination gives each piece character while making the pair feel deliberately designed.

Choose a palette that belongs on your table

Look at the surface where the coasters will sit and the cups you use most. Pick one colour from that setting, then decide whether the coasters should blend into it or provide a small contrast. For a timber coffee table, warm ivory and terracotta are a useful starting point. Beside colourful cups, a quieter base gives the patterns room to show.

Keep your first palette to a base, a main accent and an optional supporting accent. The base should remain clearly visible on both pieces. Use the main accent for the marble veins and most terrazzo chips; introduce the supporting colour sparingly.

For example, you could plan this pair:

Coaster

Base colour

Pattern

Marbled

Warm ivory

Terracotta veins with generous clear areas

Terrazzo

Warm ivory

Mostly terracotta chips with a few charcoal flecks

Match the shape and check the usable size

Using the same outline keeps the pair visually connected even when the surfaces look different. Choose two circles for a softer appearance, or two squares if you prefer straight edges. Keep their thickness and rim style consistent too.

Check the base of your largest everyday mug or glass against the mould before committing. It needs to sit comfortably on the flat area. With a raised rim, measure the space inside the wall; the outside dimensions alone will not tell you whether your mug fits.

Also consider how much pattern remains visible around the cup. A design that looks balanced when empty may disappear almost completely during use.

Test the colours before the final pour

Make small samples using the material and finishing process intended for the coasters. Judge the samples once dry and sealed, beside your actual cups. Comparing them in daylight and under your evening lighting helps you spot a base that looks too yellow or an accent that feels too strong.

Use pigments intended for the casting material and follow their dosage instructions. Concrete Everything’s colour pigments have a stated addition limit for AC100, so check that guidance before increasing the colour strength.

Set out the selected colours, moulds and mixing tools before starting. This keeps last-minute colour decisions from interrupting the casting process.

Give the marble pattern a clear direction

Plan the marbled coaster around one main sweep of colour. A diagonal movement across a square or a gentle curve across a circle gives the surface a readable pattern. Leave some uninterrupted base colour around it so the veining has space.

The powder and liquid must first be mixed properly according to the material instructions. The gentle blending comes when creating the decorative colour pattern: too much stirring at this stage merges the tones and loses the veins. Concrete Everything’s marble and terrazzo design guide explains this distinction between flowing colour and chip-based patterning.

Think of your sketch as a guide to direction and contrast. Allow the pour to create its own smaller variations.

Size the terrazzo chips to suit the marbling

Choose chip sizes after deciding how bold the marble pattern will be. Fine veins sit comfortably beside smaller chips. Broad bands of colour can support a few larger fragments in the companion coaster.

Keep the largest chips small enough to read as part of a scattered pattern across the coaster. Mix in smaller fragments to avoid a surface dominated by just two or three blocks. Leave visible background between the chips, especially if your marble design is light and open.

Before casting, arrange a few dry chips over your base-colour sample to judge the combination. This previews colour balance, although the final positions will change during casting. For the casting step, follow the recommended chip loading rather than adding more purely to fill visual gaps.

Finish both pieces to the same standard

Follow the material’s guidance for demoulding, sanding and drying. Sand terrazzo evenly to reveal the chips while keeping the face level. Compare the edges of both coasters so one does not look noticeably sharper or rougher than the other.

Choose a consistent surface sheen. Even with matching colours, one glossy piece beside one matte piece can make the set feel unfinished. Test your chosen coating on a sample first.

Concrete Everything’s acrylic sealant is intended to restore colour after sanding and provide a protective coating. Follow its application and curing instructions before using the coasters for drinks. For iced drinks in Singapore, include condensation exposure in your finishing plan and ask the facilitator which care routine suits the completed pieces.

Make the pair together in Singapore

Concrete Everything’s Marble and Terrazzo Coasters Workshop lets participants make one marbled coaster and one terrazzo coaster in the same session, choosing their own colour combinations. These are cast marble effects rather than coasters cut from natural marble.

The workshop offers several shapes, including circles, squares and hexagons, with options involving raised walls. Bring a photograph of your table setting and your palette idea. Discuss both designs together before pouring, so the colour choices and moulds support the pair you want to make.

FAQs

What if one coaster turns out much darker?

Compare the pieces after both have received the same finish. If the difference remains distracting, remake the darker piece using a lighter tested mixture. Extra sealant will not reliably correct a colour mismatch.

Can I use leftover coloured material as terrazzo chips?

Fully cured, compatible casting material can become decorative chips. Keep leftovers clean and separate by colour, then check the preparation method before incorporating them into a new cast.

How can I recreate the palette for more coasters?

Record the material and pigment weights for each colour. Keep a finished sample as a reference; a photograph alone is less reliable for matching the next batch.

Should I add cork backing?

A thin cork backing can cushion contact with the table. Apply it to a dry, finished underside, keep it within the coaster’s outline and check that the coaster sits level.

Can the finished coasters hold snacks directly?

Do not assume so. Concrete Everything states that its acrylic sealant is not food safe. Use the coasters beneath drinkware; direct food contact requires a suitable material and finish.
